On a note completely unrelated to this album, the
inspiration for Suzanne Vega’s big hit, “Tom’s Diner,” was Tom’s Restaurant in
Manhattan, which also served as the exterior to Monk’s, the diner frequented by
the crew on
Seinfeld. No doubt the most popular greasy spoon in the world.
This is a very simple and beautiful little pop-folk album
full of hushed melodies and finger-picked guitar. It’s reminiscent of Irish or
British folk albums particularly from
the 1960s. No surprise that the album
went platinum in England and much of her early work found quite a bit more
success overseas.
