The Incredible String Band was formed by Robin Williamson
and Clive Palmer, two club rats of the Edinburgh folk scene of the mid-1960s.
They brought in Mike Heron and recorded and released a eponymous album.
Afterward, Williamson journeyed to Morocco and Palmer left
to the mystical east (Afghanistan, India). Both returned, but only Williamson
joined back with Heron to continue the band eventually adding their girlfriends
– Rose Simpson and Christina McKechnie -- to record The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter.
The Hangman’s
Beautiful Daughter is a hippie fare: flowing, light songs featuring any
number of instruments including many brought over by Williamson from northern
Africa.
The band toured the United States in 1969 and played
Woodstock although they refused the stage opening night when it rained and
instead played the following day.
In honor of Gary Burger of The Monks becoming mayor of
Turtle River, Minn., Simpson became Lady Mayoress of Aberystwyth in Wales.
Local politics was a huge future for 1960s rock bands.
