I think this was an excellent idea: A 200-year-old vampire tells his life story to a reporter. The intrigue of an immortal being living through all of history, wars, presidents, the travesties and victories of humankind.
However, I think this would have been far more interesting if Anne Rice had dumped the whole narrative and plot and just had Lestat and Louis going through adventures of history. Fighting in the Civil War, the French Revolution, Watergate, et al. Killing people. Writing biographies.
Instead, they get wrapped up with ol' Claudia and end up going to Paris and then getting entangled with this weird vampire theatre troupe.
In fact, it would also have been interesting to see them going in and out of vampire cultures and lifestyles. The vampire theater troupe is probably just a gateway to a ton of other cool vampire things like circuses.
