I always think about cavemen and people that existed in pre-industrial society and wonder if they had to deal with cancer and asthma.
I think they did although they never lived past 35 years old anyway because of the common cold, starvation, tuberculosis and being eaten by saber-tooth tigers.
They died young for any number of reasons, but I wonder if any of them were due to what we might call environmental reasons. If pollution and tobacco and alcohol and fatty hamburgers cause heart disease and cancers, were these unknown maladies 200 years ago?
It seems reasonable that the advances in industry and all the crap we're putting into our bodies and into the air hasn't had some overall ill effect on us all. These are the things that Todd Haynes films will make you think about.
